2K Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Change Follows Mixed Feedback

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a distinct game identity.

The president noted that the team is now overhauling the project with a renewed approach, aiming to address community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by 2K Games in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock development group.

Here is the complete content from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to continue.”

With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to consideration and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its promise to our players.

The trust in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, Ben officially joins us on next week.

His guidance and experience in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the recent years producing and leading some of the most recognizable franchises in the industry, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to continue observing the progress of the game in the time to follow.

The President

Experience of the New Head

Brinkman currently holds the position of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in October 2024 alongside a public demo. Then, the developers presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and challenges that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, put it on the line, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."

Project Ethos has not yet received an announced release date or consoles, but fans can look forward to further news as development advances.
