A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
