Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team While McCarthy Misses Out

Rugby squad selection news

Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has selected skipper Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn matches, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash also miss out due to injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the summer tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped player in the 34-man group, but the Irish Rugby Football Union states new provincial duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "backup".

After facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team will play Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains available, with the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC game at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third fly-half selected as Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has been in a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city previously.

The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a international appearance.

Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.

Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for Doris should the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to Chicago on the following day.
