Major Power Outage in Spain and Portugal Revealed as 'Pioneering of its Category', Investigation Finds
A major electrical overvoltage that triggered a widespread electrical failure across Spain and Portugal has been identified as the "most severe" power disruption in European nations during the last two decades, and represents a pioneering occurrence of its category, according to a recently published report.
Damian Cortinas of the organization of electrical system controllers announced that this particular incident marked the initial documented blackout to be specifically initiated by voltage surge, which happens when surplus electrical pressure accumulates within a grid.
"This is unprecedented ground," Cortinas stated, adding that the group's function was "not to assign responsibility to any party" regarding the primary source.
The April's power failure caused significant chaos for almost one full day when it cast multiple areas into powerless state, terminating digital communications and suspending transportation systems.

The electrical failure affected extensive regions of the Spanish territory and Portuguese nation, and temporarily impacted southwestern France.

Both the key system controller and the private firms have insisted that they were not at fault. The parent company has blamed the outage on certain coal, gas and nuclear power plants' inability to help maintain correct power parameters.
Local power providers stated it was generated by inadequate preparation from system controllers.

The political rivals proposed that an increasingly heavy reliance on sustainable power, advocated by the current administration of the prime minister, could have been a relevant element in generating the blackout and the territory's diminishing production of nuclear energy meant a dependable back-up was not available.
The administration roundly rejected these hypotheses and the new report was cautious to stay impartial when it concerned the reasons of April's unprecedented blackout.

National atomic energy facilities instantly ceased operations when the blackout occurred, and the fuel processing entity reported it stopped production at its petroleum facilities.
