Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
