Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
